Trauma

Initially I wrote this blog to address the senseless murder of ten precious souls that were killed in Buffalo on May 14, 2022. But today on May 24,2022, two teachers and 19 children were gunned down at school. As a registered nurse I have provided care to individuals that have experienced physical trauma, i.e gunshot wounds, stabbings, car accidents and other traumatic injuries. During this initial insult, we forget about the mental trauma that also occurs as a result of these injuries.

American’s are experiencing both mental and physical trauma once again by a mass shooter that demonstrated hate and disdain for others. This causes one to question how can those in power continue to sit and watch and do nothing to protect the citizens of this country? It is distressing and the reality that this behavior continues to happen, is incomprehensible. The hypocrisy is startling because the same individuals that claim to worry about the sanctity of life, want to instill fear and retain power over others. It must stop.

As a member of the global majority, I grow weary of Congress and others who pretend they care about my interest and safety. The lens in which they view the world continues to be opaque and diluted.

I can confidently say all of us want to be free to live, thrive and enjoy our friends and families. We all have day to day activities that are required for us to live our lives to the fullest, and many are just trying to make it through the day. Either way, we all want to live without fear from those who foster hate and distrust.

No one wants to experience trauma at the hands of others. This issue is becoming too common and nothing has changed. Many states have loosened gun laws and one has to assume everyone has a weapon and that can be paralyzing for many including law enforcement. But, that is another story.

It is time for change. Aren’t you tired of hearing about senseless murders of Americans on the news? Think about all the gun related deaths that occur that are not covered by the media. Either way it is time for a new congress. It is time to retire the career politicians, because they have shown they do not care about their constituents. Everything appears to be about their personal agenda. It is time for action, people!

Please do your part and vote your interest because your life literally may depend on it.

  1. I believe that people genuinely want to change things but knowing where to start can make things seem more difficult than it really it. Thank you for starting the conversation. We all have a part that can potentially change the future.

  2. Excellent article on Trauma, this message should resonate with all. The irony is the people we elect are not doing the will of the people; 90% of the people want universal background check but the politicians refuse to bring it to vote.

  3. Unfortunately the only way to remove a “do nothing” Congress is to fix campaign finance reform because in this situation and so many others, our elected officials have been bought and paid for by lobbyists for the NRA, Big Pharm, Religious Right-Wing and billionaire puppeteers such as Sheldon Addleson, Rupert Murdock, Elon Muske, Jeff Bezos, and big Oil. Just as we have Educational & C-Span channels on our TV’s, there could Channels set aside for Candidates each having an hour per day to address voters in their Congressional Districts and no advertisers will be allowed. We will not need campaign contributions from political PACs or private lobbyists and $100,000 per plate fundraising dinners sponsored by billionaire donors. When Congress set aside funds for various fiscal items, each viable candidate for public office shall be allotted a set $ amount for campaigning and will be prohibited from taking ANY $ from industries or individuals they will be regulating. The love of money and manipulation by Wall Street of stocks and bonds will cease. AND, Americans making over $500k per year will be taxed on their wealth rather than their income.

  4. Unfortunately, the Governor of TX, its Senators, majority of its Congressional delegation at the State and Federal levels care more about being ProBirth than it does about protecting its citizens from nut cases with guns. The NRA and other pro-gun Syncophants will not allow changes in TX.

  5. Very distressing times. My 10 yr. old grand daughter came home yesterday after school and all I could say was “I’m glad you are safe”.

  6. Well said! You can’t buy cigarettes until you’re 21, but a gun at 18?
The prefrontal cortex of the brain is not fully developed until age 25. Where is science and reasoning?
After so many senseless shootings we need to change and secure access into the schools and even churches for that matter. We need security at our schools there are bouncers at clubs?!
It’s past time for something to be done. Our priorities need to change.

  8. Yes, everything you said is true. The only way to make a change is to vote out those who are wanting power. It’s right in our faces who is doing wrong, so it needs to change. Get your voting rights in order and go make a difference people. Our lives are at stake!!!!

  10. I totally agree. Nothing will change unless we get out and vote and vote out all these old politicians that only care about retaining power and their own personal agendas.

  11. Just awful. I blame Greg Abbott for disaster. 18 year olds can get an assault weapon before they can buy alcohol is just crazy as hell. He should have bought a six pack and drank it, got drunk and went to sleep somewhere.
